Cultural Intelligence as A Leadership Competency

Issue Abstract

ABSTARCT

Cultural intelligence, or CQ, has become an important skill for leaders in today's world, where people from many different cultures work together. Unlike other skills like IQ or EQ, CQ focuses on understanding and dealing with the challenges of working across cultures. It helps leaders better understand cultural differences, bridge gaps, and create a more inclusive environment.

This research looks at how CQ has developed over time, including its four main parts—thinking, motivation, behavior, and awareness.

It also shows how these aspects are important for modern leadership. Using examples from big companies like Microsoft, Unilever, and Starbucks, the study explains how leaders with high CQ can improve teamwork, solve conflicts, and help businesses succeed worldwide. A closer look at Satya Nadella’s leadership at Microsoft shows how making CQ a key part of the company's culture led to better teamwork, new ideas, and long-term success.

The study shows that CQ is not just a nice-to-have skill, but a necessary part of leading effectively. Leaders who develop CQ can turn diversity into a strength, helping their teams be more creative, stronger, and more successful. The research makes it clear that future leaders will need to build on IQ, EQ, and CQ, with CQ being a key part of leading well in a global, diverse world.

The findings emphasize that cultural intelligence is not merely a supplementary skill but a strategic leadership requirement. Leaders who cultivate CQ can convert diversity into a source of innovation, resilience, and sustainable advantage. This study underscores that the future of leadership lies in the integration of IQ, EQ, and CQ, with cultural intelligence serving as a cornerstone for inclusive and effective global leadership.
